MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay disputed an accusation from administration officials that members of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) are merely riding on President Aquino’s popularity to increase their chances of winning in the elections.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC), Binay said that he also enjoys high popularity ratings, as well as UNA stalwarts Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and former President Joseph Estrada.
“In the first place, mataas din naman ang aking survey a. Lalo na pag pinagsama mo ang survey ni Jojo Binay, at tsaka ni Senator Enrile, tsaka ni President Erap,” he said.
Binay added that as the “new opposition,” the United Nationalist Alliance can be supportive of the President’s policies and programs and at the same time speak against wrongdoings.
Binay said that the UNA does not intend to be personal in doing so.
“E sinasabi na namin e, we are the new opposition—an opposition who will be supportive of matters which the President is undertaking tapos tutulong kami kung kailangan magdagdag kami ng suggestions sa kanilang mga panukala. Pero hindi namin bibitawan na ibunyag, ipaabot sa mamamayan ang maling nangyayari,” he said.
Binay said that intrigues are being sowed between him and the President.
“Talagang iniintriga ang samahan naming dalawa ng Pangulo. Ewan ko kung ano ang purpose nila para kami ay pag-intrigahin. Wala naman kaming dapat pag-intrigahan. I think the President was clear in his statement. Wala naman kaming pinagdaanang diperensya and he is satisfied with the manner by which I am working…,” he said.
Asked about being possibly pitted against DILG Secretary Mar Roxas and Senator Bong Revilla in the 2016 elections, Binay said that “everybody has a right to be a candidate” but said that the 2016 elections are still far away.
Binay lamented being at the receiving end of “personal” attacks about the state of his health, saying that he is healthy and exercises five times a week.
