MANILA, Philippines -- A Korean national was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) after he was found guilty of selling the drug ecstasy.
Judge Thelma Bunyi-Medina of Manila RTC Branch 31 found 53-year-old Kim Kyu Yeol guilty beyond reasonable doubt of violating Section 5 of Republic Act No. 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
He was sentenced to life and required to pay a fine of P500,000.
Yeol was arrested by operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) during a buy-bust operation at a restaurant in Harrison Plaza in Ermita, Manila last December 17, 2009.
He was arrested after selling 10 capsules of ecstasy to a PDEA poseur-buyer.
PDEA director general Undersecretary Arturo Cacdac Jr.
said he is elated over the decision of the court.
"A favorable ruling on drug cases greatly complements the efforts of law enforcement officers who risk life and limb to arrest drug personalities. To see drug offenders punished with the full force of the law is our ultimate yardstick of victory," he said in a statement Thursday.
