Olay, Velarde lead Mindanao age-group chess winners [1]

MANILA, Philippines – Joannah Love Marie Olay of Kidapawan City and Jerish John Velarde of Lapu-Lapu City are the champions of the Mindanao leg of the 2013 National Age Group Chess Championship, held at the Robinson’s Place in General Santos City last Sunday.

Olay, a grade two student of Kidapawan SPED Elementary School, defeated Ma. Rynah Eureka Anabieza of GenSan in the sixth and final round to finish the tournament unbeaten in the girls under-8 category.

Last Saturday, Olay booked back-to-back wins over Rhean Jane Canino of Cagayan de Oro City and Cynthia Zambrano of Davao City to virtually clinch her first major title.

Meanwhile, Velarde won the boys under-8 category with 5.0 points.

Allaney Jia Doroy of Agusan Del Norte was the champion of the girls under-12 category with 5.0 points.

Meann Joy Baclayon of Misamis Oriental (girls under-10), Honey Grace Buenafe of Panabo City (girls under-14), Dhona Yngayon (girls under-16) and Exiquila Apao of Davao City (girls under-20) are all leading their respective divisions with 4.5 points each.

Ronald Canino of Cagayan de Oro (boys under-10) and Chris Aldritz Pondoyo of General Santos (boys under-12) have scored 4.5 points to lead their categories.

Alberto Diolala Jr. of GenSan (boys under-16) and Nepthali Batucan of Davao City (boys under-20) have 5.0 points each to top their groups.

Bhing Joel Gimony of GenSan is leading the way in the boys under-14 division with 4.0 points.

The topnotchers in their respective categories will compete in the grand
