MAGUINDANAO, Philippines -- A suspect in the Maguindanao massacre was shot dead by police authorities after he threw a grenade at the authorities while being served an arrest warrant on Friday.
The suspect was identified as Maguid Amil, 42.
Amil was shot dead by the Maguindanao Police after throwing a fragmentation hand grenade in Barangay Iganagampong in Datu Unsay town, Maguindanao past 12 noon.
The police, along with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (CIDG-ARMM), were about to serve the warrant of arrest against Amil when the suspect suddenly threw the grenade, prompting authorities to fire at him.
Fortunately, the grenade did not explode.
"Mula doon sa bahay nila, tumakbo siya papalayo para tumakas dahil na-corner na siya. 'Yun itinapon niya ang granada. Mabuti na lang at hindi sumabog," Senior Inspector Melicio Mina of CIDG-ARMM said.
Amil was rushed to the Maguindanao Provincial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The CIDG-ARMM recovered the fragmentation hand grenade and 9 mm ammunition from the crime scene.
Amil is supposedly the 101th suspect to be arrested for the 2009 Maguindanao massacre.
