MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is anticipating heavy traffic in certain areas this weekend, particularly in the southern portion of Makati.
Several events are scheduled on Saturday including the concert of Korean performer Psy at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay and the annual Pyromusical Competition in the MOA grounds.
There is also a fun run in Quezon City and a scheduled foot bridge demolition along Commonwealth on Sunday.
According to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, they had a bad experience in the pyromusical competition in MOA after it caused heavy traffic last year.
This time, they talked to the organizers and requested them to augment their security and also help in the traffic management in and around their complex.
They are also advising motorists to avoid the area if they have no important business.
As for the footbridge demolition along Commonwealth, the MMDA only gave the contractor Sunday to complete the activity.
One direction of Commonwealth will be closed in the morning to enable the contractor to remove one half of the bridge, while the other half will be removed in the afternoon.
Whenever one direction is closed, vehicles may counterflow using two lanes on the other direction.
The MMDA is convinced, however, that the best solution to EDSA congestion is still to reduce the number of “colorum” PUVs on the road.
Central bus terminal
On Friday, MMDA opened a central bus terminal in Malabon where city buses entering EDSA from the north will be forced to go through a dispatch system, where records will be checked and dispatch will be regulated every 10 or 15 minutes.
The said system is expected to reduce bus volume by 35% or around 1,000 units.
Bus drivers are complaining, however, on the lost time that goes to queuing at the dispatch terminal.
Bus companies are also appealing for an adjustment period or at least until the end of February so they can settle fines from violations.
The new dispatch system keeps track of all violations and a driver cannot be dispatched if they have more than 5 unsettled violations.
