MANILA, Philippines – Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux’s style may make it difficult for his April 13 opponent, super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.
This, according to former HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
In an interview with Chris Robinson of Boxing Scene , Merchant said that like other boxing fans, he would prefer it if Donaire fights fellow champion Abner Mares of Mexico.
“But Rigondeaux is the type of fighter who can make a difficult fight, a boring fight, maybe,” he said.
“It will be up to Donaire to make him fight his fight,” Merchant added.
Merchant noted that Donaire has proven that “he can handle any style” of boxing so far in his career, but points out that Rigondeaux is a different opponent altogether.
“I don’t know if he’s seen somebody who’s as much of a pure boxer,” said the former analyst.
Rigondeaux is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who is widely regarded as one of the best amateur boxers of all time. He has won all 11 of his professional fights so far, with eight wins coming by knockout.
Against Donaire, Rigondeaux will defend his World Boxing Association super bantamweight belt. Also on the line is the Filipino’s World Boxing Organization and RING super bantamweight titles.
