[11]MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire Jr. says he is not taking over Manny Pacquiao's throne as king of Philippine sports.
The 4-division boxing champion said all he cares about is giving fans what they want.
"I'm not taking any mantle from anybody," he told Asian Journal’s Joseph Pimentel [12].
"I let it be as it is if I can make fans happy that's what it’s all about."
Donaire's star shone brightly in 2012 when he strung together 4 victories over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Jeffrey Mathebula, Toshiaki Nishioka, and Jorge Arce.
Meanwhile, 2012 was also the year when Pacquiao suffered 2 straight losses. The last one was a 6th-round knockout at the hands of his nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez.
This allowed Donaire to overtake his idol in the Ring Magazine's pound-for-pound rankings.
The Filipino Flash now ranks 5th among the top boxers in the world. Pacquiao went down to No. 7.
Donaire’s next fight will be against highly skilled Cuban champion Guillermo Rigondeaux.
The Cuban warned Donaire to prepare for a difficult fight.
“Tell Nonito to prepare for what’s coming,” he said in Boxing Scene.
But Donaire shrugged off the warning.
“Rigondeaux’s smart but not slick,” he told the Philippine Star's Quinito Henson.
“He’s only fought guys who stood up straight in front of him. He hasn’t fought anyone who counters or shows movement.”
