MANILA, Philippines – Talk 'N Text clamped down on Japeth Aguilar to seal a 99-79 rout over GlobalPort at the PBA Commissioner's Cup on Wednesday.
Aguilar, who demanded his release from the Tropang Texters, only scored 4 points against his former team.
This is in contrast to his average of 15.7 points in Batang Pier's first 3 games.
Import Keith Benson led Talk ‘N Text with 20 points, 19 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Jayson Castro and Jimmy Alapag provided able backup with 19 and 15, respectively.
“It was a big test for us especially since a lot of people were making a big deal about the game against Japeth. We just wanted to come and play well today,” said Texters’ coach Norman Black in PBA.ph.
Buoyed by its 89-80 win over crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra last Friday, GlobalPort quickly piled up an 8-point lead over Talk ‘N Text in the early part of the first quarter.
Batang Pier, however, failed to make adjustments when the Texters began catching up by tightening their defense.
Talk ‘N Text was in the lead, 49-45, at the half.
Things went from bad to worse for GlobalPort in the next 2 quarters when Talk ‘N Text limited Batang Pier to just 21% shooting from the floor.
“We were able to accomplish some of the things we wanted to do in this game. I noticed after our last game we were last in defense in the league. I reminded the players of that and we just wanted to come out with a good defensive effort today for us to have a chance at winning,” said Black.
Import Justin Williams and Gary David each scored 19 points for GlobalPort.
Talk ‘N Text is now tied with Barako Bull for joint third with 2-1 each.
Batang Pier slid down to fourth place with a 2-2 record.
