MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire wants Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux to sign the contract for additional drug testing before their scheduled press conference in New York on Thursday (Friday in Manila), or he will pull out of their April 13 fight.
Donaire had threatened to skip the press conference, to be held at the B.B. King Blues Club and Grill on Times Square, because Rigondeaux allegedly refused to sign the contract for drug testing that will be conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).
But Rigondeaux’s manager, Gary Hyde, explained that they are only waiting for a Spanish version of the contract as his fighter could not understand English. They also wanted samples of the products that nutritionist Victor Conte provides Donaire.
Following this development, Donaire announced on his Facebook account that he was going to New York for the press conference.
“So, (manager Cameron) Dunkin told me that Rigo will sign the VADA contract before the press conference, and if he doesn’t, then the presser won’t go forward. I’ll take the plane to New York and take my chances,” Donaire said.
But on Thursday afternoon Manila time, Donaire told his followers on Twitter and Facebook that the Rigondeaux camp was still stalling.
“How much more stalling? They got the translation Tuesday morning, and it’s taking them until Thursday to sign it,” said Donaire. “Their games end before the press conference with the signing of the VADA agreement, or the fight is off.”
Donaire, the only active fighter who submits himself to year-round drug testing by VADA, earlier clarified that he did not require Rigondeaux or any of his opponents to undergo additional tests.
In an ESPN report , Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said the issue about the VADA testing has already been resolved.
“We have a fight,” said Arum.
The Donaire-Rigondeaux clash will be a title-unification bout for the WBA, WBO and The RING Magazine super bantamweight belts. It will be held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.
