MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire Jr. acknowledged that his next opponent, Cuba’s Guillermo Rigondeaux, is astounding as an amateur boxer.

Rigondeaux, who will be going up against the “Filipino Flash” on April 13, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a seven-time Cuban national champion.

He also won the WBA super bantamweight belt after seven fights as a professional.

But Donaire, the WBO, RING and WBC silver super bantamweight champion, said Rigondeaux still lacks experience in terms of quality opponents.

“I say Rigondeaux is a great fighter but I believe he still needs experience and he has to prove that on April 13,” he said in a Philboxing report by Oliver Iglesias.

The fight was officially announced on Thursday in New York City.

It was nearly shelved when the Cuban fighter delayed signing the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) contract until the press event Thursday (Friday in Manila).

Guillermo eventually agreed to the drug testing protocols, paving the way for their unification title bout at the historical Radio City Hall in New York this April.
