[11]MANILA - The Sultanate of Oman will hire 3,288 foreign doctors and nurses to fill a shortage in its hospitals and medical centers, Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said Friday.
Dimapilis-Baldoz, in a press statement, said the job openings are a good opportunity for Filipino doctors and nurses.
“This latest positive development will certainly boost the chances of our highly-skilled and highly-qualified medical workers, particularly our nurses, of getting a job in Oman if they are inclined to," she said.
Quoting Philippine Ambassador to Oman Joselito Jimeno, the labor chief said Oman will have a shortage of around 8,900 doctors and nurses by 2015.
Oman Health Minister Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid al-Saidi told Jimeno that the Sultanate wants to hire more nurses from the Philippines, particularly nurses specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, anesthesiology, surgery (neuro and cardio), intensive care, and psychiatrics.
Professional nurses in Oman get an average basic salary of US$703.79, based on employment contracts processed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).
Oman will need 4,464 doctors by 2015, but can only source 1,176 of them locally, Dimapilis-Baldoz said. Around 5,598 nurses will also be hired from abroad.
Jimeno said Oman's budget for health services rose 9.4 percent in 2013 from US$1.3 billion to US$ 1.4 billion.
