Factbox: Five facts about ‘Noynoy’ Aquino
MANILA, Philippine - The only son of the Philippines' former leader Cory Aquino, the heroine of the 1986 "People Power" revolution who died in August, said late on Saturday he may consider raising taxes if elected only if it was clear the budget gap was not likely to be quickly reduced.
Opposition Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino, the frontrunner in opinion surveys and a reluctant candidate, said he had sought divine guidance and consulted political leaders across the country before deciding in September to accept the plea of the nation to continue his parents' fight for clean government.
Here are key facts about Aquino:
- Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III was born in Manila on Feb. 8, 1960, to Corazon and Benigno Aquino Jr. His father, a senator who staunchly opposed the rule of strongman Ferdinand Marcos, was assassinated when he returned home from political exile in 1983. The killing shocked the nation and helped propel Marcos out of office in the 1986 "People Power" revolution. Corazon Aquino ruled as president from 1986 until 1992.
- A graduate of economics from the Ateneo de Manila University, Benigno Aquino was a three-term member of the House of Representatives, from the Tarlac constituency north of Manila. He was a congressman from 1998 to 2007.
- In 2007, he was elected to the Senate for a six-year term. He belongs to the Liberal Party of the Philippines and has been an opponent of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo since 2005, when his mother and party colleagues called on her to step down due to allegations of poll fraud.
"I had no ambitions to run in the 2010 elections but I responded to the people's clamor. I am but the face of what we believe is the overwhelming demand of our people to repudiate everything wrong in this administration," Aquino said in his speech last month before the local business community.
- In 1987, during an attempted military coup when his mother was in office, Aquino was shot by rogue soldiers outside the Malacañang Palace in Manila. Three of his bodyguards were killed and he sustained five bullet wounds. One bullet is still embedded in his neck. He said in a Reuters interview in September he could fall victim to poll fraud in the May elections or even be assassinated.
- Aquino is single, but has dated several television personalities and is currently seeing a local politician 20 years his junior. He says he is a music and movie buff, and is a shooting and billiards enthusiast. He has four sisters, including popular television host and actress Kris Aquino, whose support is considered a crucial plus for his campaign.

MANILA, Philippines—“An unlikely man of the moment.”
This is how the article in the April 26 issue of Time Magazine describes Liberal Party standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
“The Next Aquino: Can Noynoy save the Philippines?” has topped Time’s Most Read list as of 4 p.m. Friday.
It starts off with a description of Aquino’s campaign in Zamboanga: “While aides and well-wishers murmur around him, Aquino stands and holds out his arms as if awaiting handcuffs. They are lined with scratches and bruises—the toll of ceaseless hours of plunging into throngs of supporters and pressing the flesh. He grins: ‘It’s another demonstration of people power.’”
Time sums up the events that led to Aquino’s presidential bid:
“By his own admission, Aquino would not be running at all had it not been for the massive outpouring of public grief and affection that followed his mother’s (former President Corazon Aquino) death from cancer last August,” Time reports. “He says he now walks the same path first trod by his revered parents. ‘They made automatic in me the preference to take up the cudgels for those who have less in life, for the powerless,’ [Aquino] says. ‘Why should I veer away from their footprints?’”
Humble man
The article also quotes Cebu businessman, Chris Tio, a volunteer for the Aquino campaign as saying: “The senator is a humble man at an extraordinary moment. We’re in a fight for the soul of this nation.”
Says Time: “[Aquino] speaks eagerly and repeatedly about empowering the people by delivering them ‘freedom from hunger.’ His campaign has made curbing corruption its No. 1 goal; translated from Tagalog, its main slogan reads, ‘With No Corruption, There’s No Poverty.’”
The article also touches on Aquino’s family history and describes him as a “product of status quo.”
“Both his parents, Ninoy and Cory, came from pedigreed stock—landed, aristocratic families that have long been part of the ruling establishment,” says Time. “Similarly, Aquino’s vice presidential running mate, Mar Roxas, is the grandson of Manuel Roxas, the country’s first President.”
Closest rival
The article also mentions Aquino’s closest rival Sen. Manny Villar, describing the Nacionalista Party standard-bearer as a “suave, smiling businessman with a rags-to-riches story.”
“Observers say the presidential race has become a contest between Villar’s populism (and deep pockets) and the Aquino family legacy,” Time reports.
“[Aquino] talks with ease and intelligence about his plans to expand the country’s middle class with microcredit programs, to boost industry, universalize health care, fix education and shake up the judiciary,” says Time. “But there are doubts about how savvy an operator he will be when thrown deep into the murky world of Philippine politics.”
The article also quotes Inquirer columnist and former National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) Director General Solita “Winnie” Monsod saying that Aquino “doesn’t have his father’s charisma, but he has his mother’s sincerity. Whether that’s enough, I don’t know.”
People remember
“The people remember his parents,” Monsod adds. “For them it’s like going back to Camelot.”
Says Time: “Aquino is more humble about his role, fitting for a person who has lived quietly for much of his life in the shadow of his parents’ legend.”
“We are just instruments put in the right position to execute God’s will, Aquino tells Time. “I crossed my Rubicon in 1983,” he adds, referring to the year his father, the late Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., was assassinated. “I cannot accept that he would die for nothing.”
And judging from the “confetti and shredded paper” billowing from out of the office buildings in Zamboanga, “the wail of sirens and the ceaseless chanting of ‘Noynoy!,’ neither can countless Filipinos.” Inquirer Research
Manny Mogato
Mr. Mogato your facts is screwed up. It is all bullshits. It is not true that Cory is heroien of the people powers. That is bullshit. Cory is just an opportunist and lucky to be the President of the country. Poeple power was initiated by Cardinal Sin to protect Ponce Enrile, Fidel Ramos, Honasan ang some small number of soldier who was about to be taken by Gen Fabian Ver. The is the truth. President Marcos was convinced by President Reagan to abandon the presidency thru Senator Lugar. They are the one who took Marcos Family to Hawaii. After president Marcos Family left tne palace, Cory's supporter, leftist and paid protestor went to Malacanan lead by relatives of Cory and some hungry politician and looted the Malacanan. That is the truth. Ninoy was killed by unknown assailant and up to now nobody knows who order him to be killed. Ninoy left the united state with alyas for personal purpose. Stipulation he was groomed to take the presidency after Marcos abandoned the presidency. His family only the one who knew of his travel to the Philippines. What the hell happened that the assailant knows he is coming? The big question sino ang nag-Hudas? Is this a big set up? Who oder to get him killed.
This is not the fact that people are looking for.
its a shame shame shame!
We need to know the facts about accomplishments and his record to fight corruption during his term.
