CJSearch PROFILE: Rene Vergara Sarmiento
Rene Vergara Sarmiento, 58, became Comelec commissioner in 2006. His candidacy for the CJ post hangs in the balance because of a case filed before the Office of the Ombudsman back in 2010.
Ma. Cristina Agustin and Nelson Selis of the Philippine Computer Society accused Sarmiento of involvement in an alleged anomalous purchase of computers.
Sarmiento is said to be well-liked and respected by his colleagues and electoral stakeholders.
He vied for an associate justice position back in 2010.
He earned his AB Political Science at the San Beda College, where he graduated magna cum laude. He took his Law at UP, where he also became president of the Law Student Government.
He passed the Bar in 1979 with a grade of 76.35%.
Prior to his Comelec post, he was Officer-in-Charge of the office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process from 2005 to 2006.
He was also a panel member and eventually vice-chairman of the government panel for the peace talks with the CPP-NPA-NDF from 1996 to 2006.
He was also a member of the Constitutional Commission that drafted the 1987 Constitution.
