Chua takes over as Ginebra head coach
MANILA, Philippines – Perennial crowd favorites Barangay Ginebra Kings begin the new year with a major change, as consultant Alfrancis Chua is set to take over as the team's head coach, the league website announced.
Chua will replace Siot Tanquingcen, who will remain on the Ginebra bench as an assistant coach.
"Siot will be the first assistant, which is the role of Alfrancis at present. We've done that before and positive naman ang result," said PBA Board chairman Robert Non, who also represents Ginebra.
"It's a continuing process for the improvement of our teams," Non said.
With Tanquingcen at the helm in the last four conferences, Ginebrea has underachieved. They did not advance past the quarterfinal round of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup after finishing third in last season's Commissioner's and Governor's Cups.
Ginebra last won a PBA title in the 2007-08 Fiesta Conference, with Jong Uichico as head caoch.
Chua was formerly a head coach with the defunct Tanduay and Sta. Lucia Realty teams.
