Pacquiao to start training soon: reports
MANILA, Philippines – His fight date and opponent may not have been finalized yet but various reports claim that 7-division champion Manny Pacquiao is set to hold his training camp soon.
Pacquiao, who won over Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto via a 12th round technical knockout, will reportedly fly to the United States next week.
“According to world-renowned trainer Freddie Roach, pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao has informed him that he will arrive in California next week to begin training for his next bout,” wrote Andre Zurbrug of FightHype.com.
Michael Marley of Examiner.com also noted that Roach “said publicly that his prized pupil will jet to Los Angeles from Manila next week to begin light training at Roach’s Wild Card Gym.”
Meantime, Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star reported that the planned US trip is for Pacquiao and his family to have a “much-needed and long-delayed vacation.”
Cordero also wrote that Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin Gacal, revealed some information on Pacquiao’s impending return to training.
“Nothing’s definite. But whoever he’s fighting next, I was told that Manny wants to start training soon. It could be in LA or Baguio,” noted Gacal.
Possible foes
Pacquiao, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, is slated to face former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. on March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Negotiations for the blockbuster bout, however, hit a dent when the fighters’ camps disagreed on the drug testing procedure that should be conducted.
The tension worsened when Pacquiao sued Mayweather and some members of his camp for their doping allegations against “the Pacman.”
Meanwhile, several names have turned up as possible opponents for Pacquiao if ever the Mayweather fight does not push through.
Pacquiao’s promoters are eyeing World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman, former International Boxing Federation (IBF) light welterweight champion Paul “Paulie” Malignaggi and even Juan Manuel Marquez, the current Ring Magazine, WBA and WBO lightweight champion.
Facing Foreman would present Pacquiao the chance to win an unprecedented 8th world title in 8 different weight divisions, above of his current world record of winning 7 world titles in 7 different weight classes.
Fighting Marquez, on the other hand, would seal their rivalry which began in 2004. Their first bout ended in a draw while Pacquiao edged Marquez via split decision in 2008.

Better start early
If the fight with Mayweather will push through, then training early would be of great help to win over Mayweather.
Yuri Foreman?
Manny fighting at 154lbs against Yuri Foreman? That is seriously overreaching. Manny maybe the best fighter today but he has no place fighting at the middleweights. So, what if it's for an 8th title? In today's watered down divisions in boxing, nobody's making a big deal out of it. Boxing use to have only 7 divisions and now we there's 16 and each division may have more than one champion (super, regular, interim). Championships are not looked up as highly as they used to. In the boxing community, it'a about a fighter fighting the best fighter regardless if there's a belt on the line.
I would rather see Manny fight Marquez so they can settle the score since both their previous fights was controversial. If Manny is going to fight someone at 154lbs then he might as well fight the best in that division and that's Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams (but no way Manny will fight either), not the weakest champion in the division just so he'd get an 8th championship.
