Floyd kin says no need for Pacquiao-Marquez V
MANILA, Philippines – A relative of unbeaten American fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. believes there is no need for a fifth fight between rivals Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, even as he expects fight fans to demand the fight.
“The thing is this, who cares?” said Jeff Mayweather, an uncle of Floyd as well as a respected boxing trainer.
“To be honest, the only reason there has been as many fights as they have had is because Pacquio really didn’t win those fights,” Mayweather told Fight Hype. “It was basically Pacquiao trying to prove that he was the better fighter.”
“Since every time you fought him it was controversial, you did have to keep fighting him. Either yourself or your team or somebody that was involved with Pacquiao had to have doubt that he was winning those fights.”
After fighting three times, with each fight ending in controversial decisions, both Pacquiao and Marquez promised to go for the knockout in their fourth fight, held last December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
It was Marquez who fulfilled his promise, knocking Pacquiao out cold with a short right hand with just a second to go in the sixth round.
“Nobody really saw the knockout coming... I think to win in that fashion is a statement all in itself,” Mayweather said of the stoppage, which has been named Knockout of the Year by several media outlets.
“This time around, he (Marquez) didn’t need the judges and there was no chance of him being cheated. He made a great statement for himself,” Mayweather added.
Mayweather said there was “no point” to a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez, yet he still expects it to happen because of the fans’ demand and the money to be made.
“It’s one of those fights where I think everybody will still spend their money to watch because everybody wants to see a good fight,” Mayweather said.
“It’s one of those situations where they can still make good money because of the history of their fights. They can still make good money,” he added.
“But me, myself personally, I don’t care to see it not more, but I think fight fans will see it.”
