La Salle dominates FEU for 5th straight win
MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle Lady Spikers had little trouble extending their winning streak as they dominated the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws in straight sets to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament.
Behind a sensational game from Ara Galang, La Salle beat FEU 25-19, 25-17, and 25-16 Sunday at the San Juan Arena for their fifth straight win of the season. The Lady Spikers have yet to drop a set in the Season 76 and have won 21 straight matches since last season.
Galang finished with 18 points on 17 attacks and one service ace, but La Salle also got strong performances from team captain Abi Maraño and setter Kim Fajardo.
“Kahit na nanalo kami, hindi pa nagtatapos dahil marami pa kaming dadaanan na team,” Galang said, noting that La Salle will face archrivals Ateneo in their next game.
Galang got off to a quick start, taking control after the first technical timeout to turn an 8-6 lead into a 13-8 advantage. The Lady Spikers went on to lead by 10, 24-14, before Toni Basas led FEU in a mini-run that cut the lead to five, 19-24.
It was Galang who killed any chances of an FEU comeback, drilling a down-the-line hit that gave La Salle the first set.
Galang continued to score in the second set, but this time she was joined by Marano and Cyd Demecillo, who took turns in testing the FEU floor defense. After the Lady Tamaraws took an 11-10 lead, La Salle scored four straight points – two from Galang kills – and never looked back.
The Lady Spikers were in complete control of the third set, and skipper Marano made sure that there would be no let-up as her steady service allowed La Salle to comfortably take the victory.
FEU had some bright moments in the opening set, with Charm Simborio, Rem Palma and Gen Casugod getting some kills through the La Salle net defense, but those moments were too few and far between for the Lady Tamaraws.
FEU now has a 2-3 record in the tournament, tied with the University of Santo Tomas.
