Gonzales crashes out of ping pong World Cup
LONDON -- Filipino table tennis player Richard Gonzales was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup of Ping Pong (WCPP).
Gonzales lost 2-1 against Russia's Maxim Shmyrev in their encounter at Alexandra Palace in north London on Sunday evening.
Reigning champion Shmyrev won the first set, 15-7, before Gonzales bounced back to claim the second, 9-15. The Russian, however, overpowered the Filipino in the third set with a score of 15-8.
Shmrev, who then faced Ilija Lupulesku of the US in the final, swept aside his opponent, winning 3-0, (15-8, 15-7, 15-12) to earn his third WCPP crown.
Gonzales, who walked away with $5,000 in prize money, is one of three Pinoys who entered the annual competition, which attracted 64 players from across the world this year.
Michael Dalumpines and Louie Pineda were both dumped out of the tournament in the first round on Saturday afternoon.
