Gin Kings score come-from-behind over Aces
MANILA, Philippines -- Barangay Ginebra survived Alaska’s barrage of three-pointers late in the game to hold on for a 93-90 win Saturday night in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Batangay City Sports Center in Batangas City.
It was the third straight win for the Kings who now occupy the solo 3rd spot with an 11-6 win-loss mark. The Aces absorbed their first back-to-back defeats in the tournament and slipped down at No. 2 with an 11-3 slate.
Cyrus Baguio led Ginebra’s offensive thrust with 20 points, 16 of which came in the second half when the Kings clawed back from 13 points down midway in the third period and completed the come-from-behind victory.
Ronald Tubid added 17 points with 10 came in the pivotal fourth period, while JC Intal had another solid performance with 15 markers. Willy Wilson chipped in 11 for coach Jong Uichico’s team.
Two-time Most Valuable Player Willie Miller led all scorers with 29 points but was hardly a factor in the middle quarters where Ginebra made the push to grab the control of the game.
Miller exploded for 15 points in the first quarter when the Aces erected a 25-18 lead. The lead ballooned to as much as 18, 42-24, on Thoss’s back-to-back baskets with 4:02 left in the second period.
But Ginebra, behind Intal, ended the half with a 10-2 run to make it a manageable 34-44 going to the break.
Alaska got its composure back and posted a 54-41 advantage with 7:22 left in the third period before Baguio, Billy Mamaril and Celino Cruz anchored a searing rally by the Kings.
Ginebra unloaded a 21-5 run to take the lead for a good at 62-59.
Joe Devance’s split free throw pushed the Aces to 62-64 early in the fourth but that was the closest that Alaska could get as Baguio and Tubid joined anew for another 21-8 scoring binge for their biggest lead at 85-70, 4:18 remaining.
But Miller tried to lead Alaska’s last-ditch run as he converted three three-point plays to threaten at 82-87 with 2:12 left on the game clock,
Uichico sued for a timeout and set a play for Sunday Salvacion who buried a triple at deep left corner to give the Kings some breather, 90-82.
It seemed that the Aces finally gave up until Tenorio hit a pair of three-pointers that sandwiched Tubid’s jumper to move closer at 88-92 but Cruz’s free throw was enough to seal the victory for the Kings, who avenged their 96-105 loss in the first round.
Joe Devance and Tony dela Cruz each had 13 markers for coach Tim Cone, who could have clinched a playoff for the second automatic semifinal seat with a win last night. Tenorio finished with 11 points.
With Alaska’s loss, San Miguel Beer is now the No. 1 team with 13-3 slate.
