Floyd's uncle prefers Khan over Maidana

MANILA, Philippines – The trainer and uncle of undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. prefers to see the pound-for-pound king face off against British boxer Amir Khan instead of Argentine brawler Marcos Maidana.

Roger Mayweather was quoted by Boxing Scene as saying that a Khan fight will be a bigger affair than a showdown with the Argentinian.

“Fighting Maidana is okay,” Mayweather said, “but I think Amir Khan would be a bigger fight.”

This does not mean that the older Mayweather thinks Khan deserves to fight his nephew, only that the British boxer is far more recognizable to the casual fan compared to Maidana.

“He’s the only guy who really has a name where you could put it on (broadcasting network Showtime),” Mayweather said. “For the networks, you need to have a guy who could (produce), in order to get the television (viewers) to watch it.”

Khan, a former light-welterweight champion, has long been rumored to be Mayweather’s next opponent when he returns to the ring in May. Maidana is in the running as well.

Mayweather, who is coming off a 2013 campaign that saw him beat Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez comprehensively, has yet to announce who his opponent will be.
