Guerrero seeks to break ties with Golden Boy

MANILA, Philippines – It’s now shaping up to be a three-way fight for the chance to meet Manny Pacquiao on April 12 as welterweight fighter Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is seeking legal remedies to leave Golden Boy Promotions.

According to Boxing Scene, “The Ghost” has sought arbitration with the California State Athletic Commission to break his fight contract with Oscar dela Hoya’s promotional outfit.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said a third party might have motivated Guerrero to break ties with the company.

"I think that maybe there is someone else whispering in his ear. I'm not going to stay any names. I think there is another promoter whispering in his ear, promising him this and promising him that. First he needs to be free. I've been down that road before. The fact is, we have a valid and enforceable contract,” he said.

Ben Thompson reported to Fight Hype that the multi-division champion wants a crack at Pacquiao.

Top Rank is in negotiations with Timothy Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov for the Filipino fighter’s April 12 bout. But Thompson’s source said a third name is in the mix.

"There's another name. Robert Guerrero," said the unnamed source.

But to do that, he has to sign with Top Rank which holds the promotional rights of Pacquiao.

Schaefer, however, noted that Guerrero will face legal impediments in seeking his release.

"The contract is under New York law. So they go to the California commission to ask them to void a New York contract. The California commission has no jurisdiction over a New York contract," he explained.

Guerrero is the former interim WBC welterweight champion and has also held titles in the super featherweight, the lightweight and the featherweight divisions.

The last time he fought was in May 2013 when he lost in a WBC welterweight title clash against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
