Donaire says focus, determination key to beating Vazquez
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. kicked off 2012 with strong punches as he trains for his upcoming bout against Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. on February 4th for the WBO super bantamweight title.
During his sparring session, Donaire strutted off a stunning eight rounds of sparring.
Donaire also tirelessly unleashed strong punches on the mitts and used the resistance band.
"Dating world champion ‘yang si Vazquez. Magaling siya at malaki kesa sa akin so kailangan ko talagang gamitin ‘yung speed ko, ‘yung lakas ko at saka yung utak ko para manalo sa laban na ito. Kaya kailangan kong ibigay lahat,” he said.
When asked if he already studied Vazquez’s fighting style, Donaire said: “As of now nag-study talaga ko sa style ni Vazquez, ‘yung pag-ja-jab niya, pagku-combination niya. So lahat yun ini-study ko lahat ‘yun."
Filipino-American Black Eyed Peas member apl.de ap. was not only impressed by Donaire’s boxing style but he said he supports Donaire and will watch the fight at the Alamodome in Texas.
"He is a great boxer as well as a person… love his techniques. I’m trying to get inspired in getting fit," he said.
Donaire’s coach Robert Garcia said the Filipino Flash is now at 70%.
"Nonito's skills and stance is good enough to beat anybody at featherweight also, but we need to work on his body his legs his muscles but his skills better than any featherweight," said Garcia.
"We know it's gonna be a sensational fight and Nonito is going up on 122 [pounds] it’s on the same card as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and [Marco Antonio] Rubio. But I think Donaire and Vasquez are gonna steal the show," boxing promoter Bob Arum said.
In just three weeks, Donaire will slug it out with Vazquez in San Antonio, Texas.
For Donaire, determination and focus is the key to beat the Puerto Rican opponent.
