Coleman faces Rua in UFC 93 after two-year lay-off
After a two-year lay-off, mixed martial arts (MMA) great Mark Coleman will return to the Octagon on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) for a rematch with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in UFC 93.
Set in the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland, UFC 93 will also mark Rua’s return to the Octagon in the 205-division after being sidelined for an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in March 2008.
Coleman (15-8), who has not fought since losing to Fedor Emelianenko in October 2006, is expected to bring in his stand-up skills along with his trademark strength to overpower the Muay Thai expert from Brazil.
“I'd say his main weakness -- the one big advantage I have -- is my strength,” Coleman told AOL Sports.
The 44-year-old Coleman, however, conceded that Rua (16-3) also has very good stand-up skills aside from being an excellent ground fighter.
“I know he's been doing Muay Thai for 10, 15 years, so obviously he's got some pretty good stand-up skills, and I really respect his ground skills because he's so active and so quick down there that he's definitely a threat in the submission game,” he said.
In their first fight, Rua dislocated his elbow after being hit by a takedown maneuver by Coleman.
A melee exploded between both camps immediately after the stoppage.
“Believe me or not, I don't hold bad feelings about him,” the 27-tear-old Rua told UFC.com through an interpreter. “We spoke some time after that and cleared terms.”
But Rua thinks he still has an unfinished business with the MMA big man.
“What I think the most about the first fight is that it wasn't really finished, so we have to really settle this and fight fair and square to see who's the best. That's something I’ve wanted since that first fight,” he said.
Meanwhile, UFC 93’s main event will be between former two-division world champion Dan Henderson and former UFC middleweight king Rich Franklin in the light heavyweight division.
Franklin, who totes a record of 26-3, will be coming off a win over Matt Hamill whom he defeated by technical knockout in UFC 88 on Sept. 6, 2008.
Henderson, on the other hand, is also coming from a victory over Rousimar Palhares also in UFC 88 when he scored the win by points. He holds a record of 23 wins and 7 losses. Dennis Gasgonia, abs-cbnNEWS.com
