Arellano foils Mapua in Fr. Martin Open
MANILA, Philippines – The Arellano University Chiefs and the College of St. Benilde-B Blazers started the year with a bang after posting big wins last Saturday at the resumption of the 9th Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open.
James Forrester scored 14 points as the Chiefs fought off the Mapua Cardinals, 89-78, at the St. Placid gymnasium in the San Beda-Manila campus in Mendiola.
The Chiefs picked up their third consecutive win in four matches, putting them on top of Group B.
Levi Hernandez backed up Forrester with 13 points for the Chiefs, while Prince Caperal had 10, including a pair of drives that clinched the game in the last seven minutes.
Caperal’s contributions came during a decisive 7-0 run at the start of the final quarter, allowing the Chiefs to gain a comfortable 71-63 advantage.
The run allowed the Chiefs to move away after the Cardinals had come as close as one point, 63-64, at the end of the third quarter.
Meanwhile, the Blazers fought back from four points down in the final period, and leaned on a three-point play by Alfonso Saavedra to push off the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 69-67.
Paolo Taha fired 23 points for the Blazers, while Saavedra finished with 11.
The Blazers now hold a 1-0 win-loss card in Group A.
