MANILA, Philippines – Michael Weiss has been released as the head coach of the Philippine national football team effective January 15, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announced on Monday.

“The coaching staff will be reformed in time for the AFC Challenge Cup 2014 Finals in May 2014,” the PFF said.

“PFF made a year-end evaluation with team management and determined that a re-organization of the coaching staff is the best for the team,” the organization added.

Weiss took over as head coach of the Azkals in January 2011 and led the team to a bronze-medal finish in the AFC Challenge Cup and the semi-finals of the Suzuki Cup in 2012.

With Weiss at the helm, the national team also reached their highest ever standings in the FIFA world rankings at 127th.

“He gave us the complete results that we want, but at the same time… If the question is to be, if I’m happy or not, I’m happy how he performed for us,” Azkals manager Dan Palami said.

“The question now is, now that the stakes are really high, are we ready to take on somebody who might be able to get us higher,” he added. “So it’s a gamble, a chance that has to be taken.”

“For as long as the players know where we are going, as long as they believe in the dream, they still believe in the blue print that I had actually prepared for the team, then any change in the coaching will ensure the benefit of the team,” Palami added.

Palami also revealed that he has already short-listed a number of candidates for the head coaching position.

In the meantime, assistant coach Edwin Cabalida is taking over the Azkals practice sessions, Palami said.
