MANILA, Philippines – Filipino light-flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) title against Mexico’s Moises Fuentes in March.

Fuentes, who currently holds the WBO’s minimumweight championship, will climb one weight class to take on Nietes.

“The title fight between world champions Donnie Nietes and Moises Fuentes was approved and both camps have agreed to make it in early March in the Philippines,” WBO president Paco Varcarcel told Boxing Scene

ALA Promotions chairman Antonio L. Aldeguer said the fight is “tentatively set" on March 2.

Nietes, with 31 wins, one loss, three draws and 17 KOs, is coming off a fifth-round knockout victory over Danai Meendaeng last November. He won the WBO light-flyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Ramon Garcia Hirales in October 2011.

Meanwhile, Fuentes is coming off a fifth-round technical knockout win over Puerto Rican legend Ivan Calderon last October.

Fuentes’ manager, Jorge Barrera, admitted that it will be difficult to fight Nietes in his hometown, but is confident his boxer can come away with a win.

“Although we know that fighting Nietes will be difficult, we are confident that Moi (Fuentes) can be crowned in the Philippines. If that win happens, we’ll decide which belt to stay with,” Barrera said.
