Referees ruined our chances, says Guiao
MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao was unhappy with the officiating during the Elasto Painters' loss in Game 3 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals to the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Talk 'N Text rallied from a 61-70 hole in the final quarter to eventually take the win, 89-80, and gain a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
In the post-game press conference, Guiao expressed his disappointment over the calls made the referees while the Texters were making their comeback and challenged the PBA to look at the officiating.
"This is the Finals, and games are going to be won very closely," Guiao said, as quoted by Spin.ph. "The difference is probably one or two possessions."
"Those possessions were, I think, important for us, but we did not get the calls. Finals ito eh. Napakalaking bagay noong ganung mga tawag na dapat naman ibigay sa team," he added.
"I think the league has to take care of that. That is their responsibility. They promised us... Nangako si Commissioner (Chito Salud) ng fair officiating. Dapat panindigan nila 'yun. I'm challenging the league to look at those incidents."
Guiao believes that the calls made by the referees ruined their chances of winning the closely contested game.
"This is the Finals. Malaking bagay para sa amin 'yun. They didn't give (the calls) to us. We tried our best, but the referees ruined the nice games, or ruined our (title) chances at least," Guiao said.
Among the possessions wherein Guiao believes the referees made the wrong call was when TNT's Jayson Castro stole the ball from Chris Tiu, leading to a score for the Texters.
No team in PBA history has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit, and Guiao admits it is unlikely that Rain or Shine will be the first.
"Gagawa ng history? Ni hindi nga kami maka-isa eh," he said. "We'll just try to delay their party or celebration."
Game 4 is on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
