Unbeated Cuban now included in Pacquiao sweepstakes
MANILA – Unbeaten Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa is now among the potential opponents of Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao for his April 12 fight date, according to the Pacman’s adviser, Michael Koncz.
Koncz told Ronnie Nathanielsz of Boxing Scene that Gamboa, who holds a super featherweight title, has been added to the list of possible Pacquiao opponents.
The 32-year-old Gamboa won an Olympic gold medal in the 2004 Summer Games, and is unbeaten in 23 professional fights.
In December 2012, in the undercard of the fourth fight between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, Gamboa defeated Filipino fighter Michael Farenas via unanimous decision, but not before getting knocked down to the canvas.
He is now coming off another unanimous decision victory over Darley Perez, for which he won the interim WBA lightweight title.
Aside from Gamboa, unbeaten American Timothy Bradley Jr., and Russian brawler Ruslan Provodnikov are also in the running for the Pacquiao fight, with the Filipino legend already having stressed his preference for a rematch against Bradley.
