MANILA, Philippines -- Purefoods forward Marc Pingris defended his teammate James Yap and the latter’s wife Kris Aquino on reports that the actress-TV host made a scene outside the house of an alleged girlfriend of her hubby.

Pingris said being linked to their fans is part of their lives as basketball stars.

"'Wag silang basta-basta naniniwala sa hindi nila nakikita, kasi sa showbiz andyan na 'yung paninira," he said.

He also said he does not think that it is in Aquino’s character to berate another woman over a mere suspicion.

"Hindi naman siguro magagawa yun. hindi naman siya nanunugod at naninigaw sa fans," he said.

Pingris is the husband of Danica Sotto, daughter of TV host-comedian Vic Sotto and Dina Bonnevie.

Purefoods center Don Allado, husband of actress Maricar de Mesa, said trust plays a big role in a couple's married life.

"There are isses and you cannot escape them. I think trust comes in to the relationship. When trust comes into the relationship then it becomes easier," he said.

Aquino earlier broke her silence on news reports saying she made a scene outside the house of Mayen Austria, allegedly a girlfriend of her husband.

In a text message sent to ABS-CBN News, Aquino denied she shouted and swore at the mother of Austria outside the residence of the Austrias in Valle Verde in Pasig City.

"In my 25 years of being in the public eye, nobody can ever say that it is in my nature na magmura or gumawa ng skandalo. I didn't shout or create a commotion," she said in a text message sent to ABS-CBN News.

"The mother of the woman cited in the Inquirer article graciously came to their gate and we had a peaceful conversation. I simply made my discomfort known about her daughter's actuations towards my husband," Kris said.

"My family received the text that Ms. Mayen Austria sent around. In it, she admitted to having 'chemical depression and could easily take an overdose of pills.' My brother and sisters advised me not to speak further about the issue," she added.

Text message sparks encounter

Austria's alleged text message was:

"To everyone. Kris Aquino passed by house to make me sugod. She spoke to my mom. Very mad, berating us saying I always text and call James. That my mom didn't bring me up right. That we shouldn't be talking to married men. She said she's leaving James and to know that I am the last straw and the reason for their break-up.

"My family has great respect for Teopacos who are our family friend. Mrs. Teopaco is Cory's youngest sister. My mom raised us right. My mom didn't deserve all that.

"James missed called and texted na he warned me papunta siya sa house. He called to tell me to apologize and say sorry. Kris said we had something going on.

"I don't deserve this most especially my mom. I have chemical depression and could have easily taken an overdose pills because of the incident. With the hugs and love of my mom and sisters, and tranquilizers, I'm okay. Do you want Kris to be in Malacañang[?]."

A bishop's account

The report that Kris went to James' alleged girlfriend's house and made a scene was also published in Friday's edition of the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper.

According to Austria's uncle, Gabby Lopez (no relation to ABS-CBN's CEO Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III), he was at the Austrias' house and that the family was entertaining guests--including Legazpi Bishop Joel Baylon--when Aquino arrived last Wednesday.

Through a phone interview, Baylon told Inquirer that he only knew about what happened when "Mayen, between sobs, related to us the incident immediately after Kris left."

Baylon said that he didn't see the actual encounter since he was inside the house with another guest, a nun based in Spain.

The bishop said that Mayen and her mother, Minna, were "obviously distressed" by what happened.

Abunda's version

Boy Abunda, Kris' best friend and co-host at SNN, said Kris was "very cool and polite" during her encounter with Austria.

He said that it would be "unfair" to say that Kris quarreled with the girl over James.

Abunda told the Inquirer: "Kris was bothered when she heard James talking on the phone with a girl who was crying. She learned from James that the girl was heartbroken and was confiding in him."

"Kris said that since she was in the neighborhood, she might as well introduce herself to the girl and the girl's family," he said.

The encounter reportedly happened in Valle Verde 2. Kris showed up at the gate of Austria at around 4 p.m.

Source says Kris swore

An unidentified source quoted by the Inquirer described the encounter this way: "Mayen went out and saw Aquino, who immediately threw invectives at her."

The source said that when Mayen's mother heard the commotion, she went out and saw her daughter in tears.

"Aquino also shouted at her (Minna): Anong klaseng nanay ka? Anong klase ang palaki mo sa anak mo? (What kind of mother are you? What kind of upbringing did you give your child?)," the source told the Inquirer.

The mother and daughter did not answer back until Aquino left, the source told the Inquirer.

Kris, James almost split last December

In Abunda's version, he said Kris first spoke to Austria's mom Nina about what has been going on in her relationship with Yap.

"She said they almost split up in December and that they were separated for weeks. Kris also told [Minna] that she is fighting hard for their marriage to work. In the middle of their conversation (Mayen) arrived and said there was nothing going on between her and James and that they're just friends," Abunda said.

Abunda insisted that Kris "spoke in a very, very low voice" during her conversation with the Austrias.

He also said that Mayen was not Yap's girlfriend but simply a fan of his professional basketball team, Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.

In 2007, Kris and James also made headlines when Yap was rumored to have had a romantic affair with Hope Centeno, one of the Belo Medical Clinic’s receptionists.
