San Mig Coffee Mixers tab Rogers as import
MANILA, Philippines – The San Mig Coffee Mixers have chosen former Southwest Baptist University player Matt Rogers as their import for the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup after former import Denzel Bowles turned out to be unavailable.
Bowles was the Mixers’ import when they won the PBA Commissioner’s Cup last season. He played for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets in the summer league and is currently playing for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
According to a report from Snow Badua on the PBA website, Bowles was unable to secure his release from the Golden Bulls.
“Denzel wants to come home. He wants to come home. Definitely interesado si Bowles na bumalik sa amin, kaya lang hindi siya nakakuha ng clearance at nag-lalaro na siya ulit doon (sa China),” San Mig governor Rene Pardo told Badua.
The Mixers decided to tab Rogers, who was their first choice for last season’s Commissioner’s Cup before they eventually ended up with Bowles.
“Last year pa kinukuha ni Coach Tim (Cone) ‘yan (Rogers), kaso hindi available at naglalaro sa Spain, kaya si Denzel ang nakuha namin,” Pardo said.
Pardo said they will retain Rogers if he performs well in the conference.
“Kung maganda ang ipapakita ni Matt, eh di siya na ang itutuloy-tuloy namin. At least that’s a good problem for us to solve,” he said.
Rogers played college ball for the Southwest Baptist University and was picked fourth over-all by Texas in the 2010 NBA Development League draft. He has averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in two D-League seasons.
