Sugar Ray: I was shocked to see Pacquiao down
MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion “Sugar Ray” Leonard says that just like any other fight fan, he was taken aback by the outcome of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez last December.
He said it surprised him to see Pacquiao be the first to go down in the fight.
“The only real shock to me was when Pacquiao was the first guy to do down. Then, all of a sudden it became a movie, because, then, all of a sudden, Marquez went down in the fifth round," the boxing legend told RingTV.
The boxing Hall of Famer said things began to look familiar when Pacquiao started to press the action in the sixth.
But then again, Marquez pulled off a surprise a second before the round ended, said Leonard.
"Pacquiao, at the same time, was coming in, trying to take advantage of an opportunity, because he had hurt him (Marquez). But then -- Pow! -- that counter-right hand got him. That kind of knockout, that's rare. It doesn't happen,” said the former five-division champion.
Leonard said things got scary when the knockout punch rendered Pacquiao unconscious.
“When someone goes down, face-first like that...let me tell you, I was very, very concerned about Pacquiao, because I like Pacquiao and I like Marquez."
“So what happened was big,” said Leonard.
