Henderson hammers split decision over Franklin
Two-time world champion Dan Henderson hammered a split-decision win over Rich Franklin as he waged a high-pressured fight against the former middleweight champ in the main event of UFC 93 Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
According to UFC.com, two judges saw it 29-28, 29-28 for Henderson while the remaining scorer saw it 30-27 for Franklin.
Henderson landed a right hand in the first round, jarring Franklin to the mat. The ex-middleweight champ, however, recovered and started his own offense with hard kicks to the body. By the end of the round, a clash of heads had cut Franklin’s forehead.
In the second round, Franklin counterpunched to keep the aggressive Henderson at bay. The two-time champion, however, was able to take down Franklin for a ground-and-pound.
It was Franklin’s turn to notch the tempo up in the third round but he was promptly taken down by Henderson, who pounded away again. The fight was momentarily halted after Henderson accidentally poked Franklin to the eye.
The two again engaged to a brawl until the end of the round.
With the win, Henderson improved to 24-7 while Franklin fells to 26-4.
The win also gave Henderson the coaching spot on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter against middleweight contender Michael Bisping.
