Arum still hopeful on Donaire-Mares

MANILA – Top Rank CEO Bob Arum remains optimistic he can still arrange a unification title clash between emerging boxing star Nonito Donaire Jr. and unbeaten Mexican champion Abner Mares.

Arum is hopeful he can still work out the Donaire-Mares bout for an April fight date.

"We'd like to get that fight done. I know that I've been contacted by Mares' manager, Frank Espinoza, and he's trying to work out a deal with Golden Boy to free up Mares,” the boxing promoter told Lem Satterfield of RingTV.

Mares, the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion, fights under Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), which competes against Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

Top Rank owns the exclusive promotional rights of Donaire, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantam king.

Arum refuses to co-promote the fight with Golden Boy but is willing to shell out a fee to pay for Mares’ services.

"We will see [Donaire] again hopefully in April. If we can free up Mares, that would be a good fight. If we can't, then [Donaire will] probably fight Guillermo] Rigondeaux," said Arum.

Arum, however, seems to agree that Donaire-Mares is more lucrative, citing Rigondeaux’s lack of marketability.

"The only way to make Rigondeaux a household name is if Fidel [Castro] came over and co-promoted with me."
