No PBA grandslam thoughts yet for TNT's Black
MANILA, Philippines – Basketball coach Norman Black said getting a PBA grandslam for his Talk ‘N Text team remains far from his mind.
Black, who steered the Texters to a 4-0 title series win over Rain or Shine for the Philippine Cup crown, said they would have to win the next conference first before even thinking of getting the grandslam.
“Maybe when we win the Commissioner’s Cup, that’s the only time when we will start thinking about it and talking about it,” he said in a report by Philboxing’s Eddie Alinea.
Black is no stranger to triple-crown victories, having been one of only four coaches in the league to achieve a PBA grandslam.
He was the head coach of the mythical San Miguel Beer team that won three straight PBA crowns in 1989.
The other coaches who are included in the grandslam list are Crispa’s Baby Dalupan (1976) and Tommy Manotoc (1983), and Alaska’s Tim Cone (1996).
Talk ‘N Text got close to winning a grandslam when it strung together an All-Filipino and Commissioner’s Cup title wins in the 2010-2011 season.
But it was thwarted by Petron during its final push for the Governor’s Cup.
“As of now, my and my boys’ concern is the next conference,” said Black.
He said that if they win the Commissioner’s Cup then that’s the “only time for us to really aspire accomplishing the rare feat.”
“Why not? But as I have been saying, hindi muna,” added Black.
