FEU marches to solo top spot in UAAP football
MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University blanked winless University of the East, 7-0, to wrest the solo lead in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men's football Season 75 at the Erenchun field inside the Ateneo campus recently.
Striker Jesus Melliza, who now has 15 goals made this season, scored in the 26th minute and two minutes away before the halftime break to power the Tamaraw booters to a whopping 4-0 lead.
"We played so aggressive and we're all happy to take the lead, but the second round remains a long way to go," said Melizza. "We need to play tougher against any team."
Other scorers for FEU were Eric Giganto (13th and 22nd minutes), Arnel Amita (29th minute) and Chy Villasenor (77th and 82nd minutes) as the Tams posted their sixth win against a loss for a league-leading 18 points.
Host Ateneo De Manila University upset defending champion University of the Philippines, 1-0, last Sunday to move to second wtih 16 points on five wins and a draw.
UP, meanwhile, routed National University, 5-0, as Gerardo Valmayor scored a hat-trick. The Maroons improved to 4-2-1 (win-loss-draw) for 13 points. NU fell to 1-5-1 slate for four points.
Valmayor scored in the 54th, 66th and 77th minute mark while teammates Gabriel Mendoza and Vincent Aguilar delivered in the 37th and 90th minutes mark, respectively.
De La Salle University posted a 4-0 win over University of Santo Tomas to improve to 12 points on four wins and three losses. Hector Borromeo hit a goal in the 36th minute while David Diamante scored in the 46th.
Derrico Diamante provided La Salle with two goals in 56th and 85th minutes.
UST has five losses in seven games for six points, while UE remains winless in seven games against a draw for one point.
In the women's side, Ateneo De Manila University leaned on striker Anne Therese Marie Martin's late lone goal to fashion out a 1-0 win over University of the Philippines for 10 points on a 3-1-1 slate.
UP remained in the bottom with 0-4-1 log for one point.
De La Salle University hit a late goal in the extra time to beat University of Santo Tomas, 2-1, as it improved to 1-1-3 card for six points. UST dropped to 2-2-1 slate for seven points.
In juniors play at the Erenchun field, Ateneo High School demolished UST High, 5-0, and Far Eastern University beat La Salle Zobel.
