Wesley So scores third draw in Corus

Young Filipino grandmaster Wesley So notched his third straight draw against Indian GM Abhijeet Gupta in the fourth round of the 71st Corus Chess Tournament Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) at the De Moriaan Community Centre in Wijk Aan See, Netherlands.

A SportsNews.ph report said the 15-year-old So tried to go for a win, but eventually decided to split the point with Gupta.

So earlier drew his match against GM Oleg Romanishin of Ukraine in the second round Sunday and FIDE Master Anish Giri of Russia in the third round Monday.

The Bacoor-based champion opened the tournament with a victory over GM Friso Nijober of the Netherlands in Saturday’s first round.

So now have 2.5 points, half a point behind third seed GM Tiger Hillarp Persson of Sweden and No. 13 seed IM Manuel Bosboom of Netherlands.

The Filipino GM will face GM Eduardo Iturrizaga of Venezuela in the fifth round on Wednesday.
