Clottey gracious yet dangerous, says Pacquiao
MANILA, Philippines – Seven-division champion Manny Pacquiao is all praises for his “The Event” opponent, Joshua Clottey, as he cited the Ghanaian’s character and boxing skills in his latest column.
“Sa aming unang paghaharap ni Ginoong Clottey, ako’y lubos na humahanga sa kanya dahil sa walang maanghang na salita siyang binitiwan, bagkus ay puro pasasalamat sa pagkakataong kami’y magkakaharap,” he wrote in his January 21 “Kumbinasyon” column on PhilBoxing.com.
“Ganyan ang tunay na boksingero, hindi madaldal. Alam ni Ginoong Clottey kung papaanong rumespeto at diyan ako hanga sa kanya.”
Pacquiao said he was writing from New York, where he and Clottey held their 2nd press conference at the Madison Square Garden on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila). The fighters faced the media on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. (Read: 'Pacquiao: I feel like a football player')
“Ako man ay ganoon rin sa kanya. Kahit naman sa iba ko pang nakaharap sa ibabaw ng ring, hindi ako nagsalita ng hindi maganda, kahit ilan sa aking mga nakaharap ay maraming salitang hindi maganda sa pandinig ang binibitiwan laban sa akin.”
The Cowboys Stadium will host the March 13 battle between Pacquiao and Clottey, where Pacquiao will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title.
Strong fighter
Pacquiao (50-3-2, with 38 KOs) went on to discuss the credentials of his opponent who hails from Ghana and is now based in New York.
“Masasabi nating hindi siya basta-basta boksingero, dahil maganda rin ang kanyang ring record na 35 win, 3 losses at 20 ang kanyang knockout,” the pound-for-pound king wrote. He also pointed out the fact that Clottey has not lost via knockout in his career.
The Filipino boxing sensation also related that he watched Clottey’s last fight against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in June 2009 at the Madison Square Garden.
Cotto, whom Pacquiao defeated in November via a 12th round technical knockout, won over Clottey in June via split decision.
“Sa tingin ko pa nga, close ang labang iyon at puwede ring si Ginoong Clottey ang nanalo,” said Pacquiao. “Ganyan din ang dapat kong asahan sa laban namin sa Marso 13. Naniniwala akong isa siyang mapanganib na kalaban.”
“Malaki sa akin, mas matangkad pa at may lakas,” he continued. “I will not be overconfident because Clottey is a good, strong fighter.”
Mayweather talks
Pacquiao noted that he will immediately start his training camp when he returns to Los Angeles, California, where he will train for 7 weeks under the tutelage of Trainer of the Year recipient Freddie Roach.
The world’s best pound-for-pound fighter was supposed to face American Floyd Mayweather on March 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada but their fight was cancelled.
The camps of the Filipino and American disagreed on the drug testing procedure that should be done.
Pacquiao also sued Mayweather and several members of his team for claiming that he was taking performance-enhancing drugs.
Despite this, Pacquiao said he still believes that his fight with the undefeated former pound-for-pound king will happen.
He was quoted by Reuters saying, “I'm still hoping the fight will be pushed through, maybe by summer time… It would be a good fight if it happened.”
He also reiterated that he is a clean and honest fighter. - With reports from PhilBoxing.com and Reuters

Gracious

Oh... I forgot. It was John David Jackson not Floyd Mayweather who said Manny is afraid of black fighters. Actually he didn't say black fighters, but African-American fighters... That's right I read your previous post poser!

*(fake) coughing* bullsh it! *(fake) coughing*
only a callous, narrow minded idiot like you would think a fighter (whose family and relatives are suffering and dying Haiti) will take money just to satisfy Mayweather's ego. Mosley and Floyd, they've been at it for the past ten years now, and after all those years of trying to get each other in the ring, Mosley's just supposed to take a dive?
Floyd doesn't have millions to give away stupid. Why do you think he came out of retirement? The IRS just took money from him. Even his garbage man filed a lawsuit against him for unpaid bills.
Nice take about drug testing protocol especially about the nurse missing the spot. I've read that already. I didn't know that you and this writer from MaxBoxing think a like.
Berto, Mosley, Floyd - The Axis of Evil
Steroids use should be treated as a crime. Period!
But, the debate about how to implement a safe and foolproof way should be started, now, by scientists and doctors, and not just by some paranoid individuals.
Also, a clause should be included in every fight contract that in the event NSAC screws up the procedure and hurt a fighter’s health, that a form of compensation be awarded the fighter, or the fighter be given the time and opportunity to heal and his health reinstated back to where before the incident happened.
Complicated, right? Yes, it is. That is why, a measure should be debated before being passed into law, before it can be adopted by boxing’s governing body.
This is why Mayweather’s blood testing idea is exposed as a charade because it lacks the details especially where USADA takes full responsibility for a fighter’s well-being in the course of implementing a measure that claims to protect atheletes’ well-being.
Who will protect fighters from WADA’s incompetence? If the fight is governed by NSAC and blood testing is done by a third party, the USADA, then, who is going to be held accountable once USADA nurse representative miss the vein and have to do another intrusion, miss the vein again, and have to do another intrusion, leaving the fighter with a sore arm affecting his performance?
Worse, what if the nurse hits a nerve? And that’s not to mention, how could they ensure a sterile place to draw the blood. How do you isolate a locker room of contaminants and other infectious hazards?
If the nurse screws up, will NSAC be be held accountable for USADA’s incompetence? And, what are the ramnifications if ever such errors occur that will result in a fighter’s injury and eventual defeat? Floyd Mayweather Jnr? The author of this blood testing measure?
See, that is why NSAC refuses to adopt such measures because it just doesn’t work with boxers!
That is why Floyd’s blood testing scheme is stupid and absurd!
If Mayweather believes that NSAC's procedures isn't enough to protect his interests as a fighter, then he should submit his remonstrations to them or declare the system broken and offer his 'fix'.
If USADA's process is better compared to NSAC, then they should require Mayweather and Pacquiao to wear protective gears you often see at olympics boxing bouts!
Simple as that!
Now, with regards to the subject above, well, it still my opinion that Andre Berto received, not just 'some extra bucks', but millions of dollars to 'step aside', and pave the way to a Mayweather-Mosley fight which I'm sure would end up with Shane Mosley taking a dive for a few extra bucks(wink!).
How sure am I? Well, tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you...

You've been trying to spread your lame a$s conspiracy crap on two articles already. Just in case you come back here and re-post your $h!t. Here's my two cents on what you said:
Dude, that is seriously overeaching and just pure bull$h!t conspiracy. Andre made a statement about his withdrawal to the media and the boxing community and he doesn't need a press conference and hoopla to make his withdrawal legit. I'm very well aware of the disaster in Haiti and I'm not insensitive enough to even doubt him. I've followed Berto's career a while and he's a pretty stand up kid and has a really bright future. It's not about Andre helping his countrymen, it's about him helping and reaching out to his relatives (some according to him died in the earthquake). And his mind is obviously with his family in Haiti and not the fight. It would've been disasterous for him to push through with the fight.
There is no way Shane and Andre would risk their reputation just so Floyd can save face and they can make some extra bucks. Shane's made a lot of money already, Andre is still young and will surely make more money in the future. I doubt both of them gives enough $h!t about Floyd's rep. Shane is a Golden Boy fighter and a shareholder. GBP doesn't promote Floyd, they act as an agent for him. I doubt also they care about Floyd's rep. All they care about is making money off Floyd. I'm with you that GBP are a bunch of scumbags but there is no f#*king way in hell Shane would ever take a dive. Shane already has a damaged rep for juicing and I don't believe he's willing to do anymore self-inflicted damage by taking a dive.
Sugar Shane ain't taking a dive for Mayweather or for anyone. He's going into the ring to beat the living $h!t out of Floyd Mayweather. And I would pay to see that happen.
Tough Fighter
Clottey is a tough fighter although some are saying that Pacquiao can beat him just like what he did with Cotto. I admire Pacquiao for acknowledging his opponents capacity...
I think Pacquiao should train
I think Pacquiao should train harder because this is not Mayweather.
