Salido: Garcia beat the doctor, not me

MANILA, Philippines – Former featherweight champion Orlando Salido is demanding a rematch from new titleholder Miguel “Mikey” Garcia after their fight last Saturday in New York City was cut short.

Garcia sent Salido to the canvas four times before an accidental clash of heads in the eighth round caused the challenger to sustain a broken nose.

The doctor elected to stop the fight before the ninth round, and Garcia won a technical decision to annex Salido’s World Boxing Organization featherweight belt as well as The RING championship.

In an interview with Boxing Scene, Salido said he “felt sick this morning because I feel like my belt was stolen.”

“If Mikey Garcia is a real champion, he will give me a rematch,” Salido said.

The Mexican warrior said he had recovered from the early knockdowns and felt as though he had a chance of winning the fight in the later rounds.

“He (Garcia) was getting tired. His punches lost their power, and he felt me coming on. I felt that in a couple of more rounds, I could have stopped him,” Salido said.

“He can call himself a champion, but until he beats me and not the doctor, I feel like I am still the champion,” he added.

Salido also revealed that he went to a hospital following the fight and tests showed that he sustained a broken nose as well.

“I had a real broken nose in the fight,” he revealed, but later said that “Real Mexicans don’t quit.”

It was Salido’s 12th career defeat, while Garcia extended his unbeaten streak to 31 fights.

Garcia won the fight with scores of 79-69, 79-69 and 79-70.
