MANILA – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is considering adjusting the league’s third conference format to give way to the country’s hosting of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship in August.

PBA Commissioner Chito Salud said the Governors’ Cup’s format will on the agenda when the league’s Board of Governors meets on Thursday.

“Without preempting the Board, there’s the probability of taking a look at possibly shortening the Governors’ Cup format. I may be asked to make a study and I will take a look at it,” Salud said in the league’s website.

Based on the approved PBA season schedule, the Governors’ Cup is supposed to run up to July 28.

The FIBA Asia Championship, which is a qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Cup, is slated on August 1 to 11.

Salud said they already tweaked the league’s schedule since they had anticipated that the FIBA tournament would begin August.

“We’d already compressed our schedule as we were told earlier that FIBA Asia will start last week of August or the first week of September,” he said.

The tournament will feature 16 Asian teams with the top three heading to the FIBA World Cup in Spain.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is banking on Gilas Pilipinas to qualify for the world meet.
