Gorres, Viloria take roads to recovery
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino fighters ZC Oliveros “The Dream” Gorres and Brian “the Hawaiian Punch” Viloria are on the road to recovery following their collapses after their respective fights against Colombians.
Gorres, who underwent 2 major brain surgeries, is able to walk though he still needs help with getting up.
Rod Mijares of PhilBoxing.com reported that Z Gorres walked a distance of about 40 to 45 feet long.
“No wonder Z was slumped on the sofa opposite Dr. Calderon’s table tired from the exercise,” he commented.
Gorres has started undergoing rehabilitation and is set to begin comprehensive rehabilitation Monday (Tuesday in Manila) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Filipino boxer won over Luis Melendez in their 10-round bout in November by unanimous decision. However, he suffered a left straight punch to the temple in the 10th round which caused a blood clot in his brain.
Gorres has been discharged from the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas after the hospital management deemed he was out of danger after the 2nd major surgery.
“Masaya ako at mabilis ang paggaling niya. Inspirado ako sa kaniya. Nilalabanan niya kung ano man ang nararamdaman niya. Matapang na bata talaga si Z,” Mark Melligen said of his fellow boxer.
Gorres’ wife, Datches, has joined him in the US while their children remained in the Philippines.
“Mga anak, hintayin niyo ang pagbabalik ko. 'Yung promise ko sa inyo, pag-uwi ko diyan. Sa mga taong sumusuporta at nagdadasal, salamat sa inyo,” he earlier told ABS-CBN North America News Bureau.
All is well with Viloria
Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Viloria, meantime, is recovering well after his collapse in his dressing room following his loss to Carlos Tamara last Saturday.
The Colombian prevailed via technical knockout in Round 12 to clinch Viloria’s IBF belt.
“We both know that sometimes in defeat you get the same respect you get in victory and Brian got that,” his manager Gary Gittelsohn told Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing.com.
Viloria was rushed to the San Juan de Dios Hospital after his collapse and was transferred to the Makati Medical Center.
“Dr. Regina Makalintal earlier told us that all the tests conducted on Viloria including the CT Scans were clear and there was basically nothing to worry about. Viloria was talking and wide awake,” Nathanielsz wrote.
The Filipino-American is set to undergo follow-up tests plus a final checkup after one week before returning to the US. – With reports from Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau and PhilBoxing.com
