MANILA – San Mig Coffee point guard Mark Barroca nabbed the PBA Player of the Week award for the second week in a row after helping the Mixers get past the Talk N Text Tropang Texters in their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals series.
Barroca scored 18 points – eight in the fourth quarter – to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds and 5 assists in San Mig’s 90-82 victory over TNT in Game 3 of their quarter-final series.
The victory allowed the Coffee Mixers to end the Texters’ three year reign in the All-Filipino Cup and advance to the semi-finals, where they will face the top-seeded Barangay Ginebra Kings starting tonight.
“Mark played big down the stretch, I think, in the last four or six minutes of the game,” said San Mig head coach Tim Cone of the former FEU guard.
“And really, our guys worked hard for it. I’m real proud of our guys right now, going back from our 1-5 start and be at the top four is really great,” he added.
Barroca said he worked hard in every possession of the game, playing even through the physical play of the Texters.
“Grabe ang banggaan,” he said, revealing that he got hit by Danny Seigle in the thigh. “Pero tuloy lang ang laro, para makatulong.”
Barroca beat Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar and LA Tenorio, as well as Petron’s Alex Cabagnot, for the weekly award.
He becomes the first player to earn back-to-back Player of the Week citations this season.
