MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao credited his players for their comprehensive victory over the Petron Blaze Boosters in Game 1 of the PBA Philippine Cup Monday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Elasto Painters turned what was expected to be a down-the-wire battle into a statement victory, pulling away in the second quarter and leading by as much as 17 points before finishing with a 103-95 win.

“We did a good job defensively,” said Guiao in a PBA.ph report. “(Petron) is a powerhouse team, and it’s just the desire and effort of the boys that got us through this first game.”

It was far from Rain or Shine’s best offensive performance, as they made only two of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc. But they more than made up for it by scoring 35 fastbreak points and got 24 points off Petron’s 25 turnovers.

They also frustrated Petron center JunMar Fajardo, who scored 23 points to go along with 15 rebounds but committed a team-high eight turnovers.

Although he is happy with his players’ effort, Guiao is not celebrating yet.

“This is just the first game,” he pointed out. “We need three more.”

What’s for sure is that the Elasto Painters will continue their fast-paced game that gave Petron so much trouble.

“We want it fast, we want it in the open court,” said Guiao. “We’re ready to play a long series. We’re ready to play at a fast, furious pace.”
