Viloria won't give up boxing
MANILA, Philippines – Former world junior flyweight champion Brian Viloria is taking a break after his 12th-round loss to Colombian boxer Carlos Tamara but it is highly unlikely that the vacation would be permanent.
In a PhilBoxing.com report, Viloria said he will take time to think about his future before finally deciding if he will leave the sport he has grown to love. He added, however, that he would "rather die doing something I love rather than go on living doing something I don’t like."
Viloria lost his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior flyweight title to Tamara via 12th-round technical knockout during their clash at the Cuneta Astrodome last week.
Following the loss, the Filipino boxer was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed in the locker room due to exhaustion.
Viloria said that despite his love for the sport, he doesn’t want to make a final decision just yet if he will return to the ring.
"It's something I really need to think about when I get back to Los Angeles and sit down with my team (trainer Robert Garcia and manager Gary Gittelsohn) and see what the best move is,” said the “Hawaiian Punch”.
“I love the sport. It's something I’ve been doing since I was five years old. My decision will come to me and I’ll know," he added.
Viloria, who will be flying back to the US on Saturday, also thanked his fans for keeping the faith despite his recent loss. “Regardless if I win or lose, at the end of the day the fans appreciate what you do,” he said.
