Donaire wraps up training camp for Vazquez bout
MANILA, Philippines -- Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. is in the final stages of his training camp for his upcoming junior featherweight match-up against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.
Donaire is set to make his debut in the junior featherweight division on February 4 at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas, against former titlist Vazquez in what will be the main undercard bout of the event.
"Handang-handa na ako, grabe 'yung preparation ko," Donaire said during his open workout Saturday at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas.
"Binigay ko lahat ng makakaya ko in terms of training," he added.
Top Rank president Todd DuBoef said Vazquez will be a good match-up for Donaire, who won title belts in the bantamweight division before moving up to junior featherweight.
"I think the style is gonna be good for Nonito. I think he likes an aggressive style, and I think Vazquez puts pressure on him like (Fernando) Montiel did," DuBoef said.
Donaire knocked out Montiel in the second round of their bout last February 2011, a stoppage that was named Knockout of the Year.
Donaire engaged in a new conditioning regimen for his fight against Vazquez in order to improve his speed and strength.
"We have a huge array of stuff that we have done," said Bazz Bazzley, one of Donaire's conditioning coach.
Vazquez and Donaire are disputing the vacant WBO super bantamweight belt. A win by Donaire puts him in the position to challenge Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka, who holds the WBC super bantamweight belt. -- Report from Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN News North America
