Ginebra mauls San Mig in Game 2, ties series
MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra dished out a terrible beating to San Mig Coffee in Game 2 of their semifinal showdown in the PBA Philippine Cup Friday night.
Making up for their painful 85-83 loss in Game 1, the Gin Kings manhandled the Mixers in front of a sellout crowd at the Big Dome for a 93-64 victory.
Their semifinals series is now tied 1-all.
The Gin Kings' rookie center Greg Slaughter posted 21 points on 8-of-11 field goals to go with his 12 rebounds.
Ginebra also drew 11 points from Jayjay Helterbrand and 10 points each from LA Tenorio and Billy Mamaril.
But it was Ginebra’s stifling defense that killed San Mig Coffee.
Joe Devance, who scored 20 big ones in Game 1, was held to just 2 points. Yancy De Ocampo only managed 3, while Ian Sangalang, who scored 8 points in series opener, went scoreless.
It was PJ Simon, Marc Pingris, and injured star James Yap, who carried the fight for the Mixers.
Simon had 16 points, while Pingris and Yap chipped in 15 and 14, respectively.
The Gin Kings dictated the tempo right from the beginning with a 24-19 lead in the opening quarter. The lead widened to 16 after Ginebra closed the half with a 48-32 advantage.
Despite several incursions by the Mixers in the third, the Gin Kings still managed to maintain the lead, 69-53 going to the fourth.
Ginebra and San Mig Coffee will battle again on Game 3 on Sunday.
