GSP batters Penn, retains UFC welterweight crown
Georges Saint-Pierre dominated “The Prodigy” BJ Penn to retain his welterweight crown in their spectacular rematch Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in UFC 94.
“I was very nervous there was a lot of pressure. [But] I did it,” said Saint-Pierre in an UFC.com interview after the match. “I trained very hard and it paid off tonight.”
Saint-Pierre battered Penn, also the reining lightweight champion, for four rounds until the Hawaiian’s camp decided to wave off the fight before the start of round five.
It was GSP’s second win over Penn, whom he defeated by split decision in 2006.
Penn had a hard time matching up with the larger Saint-Pierre, who dictated the tempo right off the bat.
“I tried to take him out but I didn't really rush it so I made him push... his boxing [became] inefficient,” said GSP.
UFC.com said the scores at the time of the stoppage were 40-35 and 40-34 twice for St-Pierre, who improves to 18-2.
Penn, a former welterweight champion himself, tried to become the first man in UFC history to simultaneously hold titles in two weight classes. He fell to 13-5-1. Dennis Gasgonia, abs-cbnNEWS.com
