Rigondeaux to Donaire: Stop the excuses
MANILA, Philippines – Cuban boxer and reigning World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux continues to challenge Filipino boxer Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire.
Rigondeaux has declared that he wants to fight Donaire, who is making his debut at the super bantamweight division on February 4 against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.
But Donaire and his team dismissed Rigondeaux, saying that there are "bigger names" for the Filipino champion to fight.
"They are just going around in circles," Rigondeaux told Boxing Scene about the Donaire camp's statements.
"I want to fight, but it looks like they don't want the fight. Stop the excuses and let's just make the fight," he added.
Both Rigondeaux and Donaire are promoted by Top Rank, which possibly makes it easier to put a fight together.
Donaire, however, is planning to challenge Jorge Arce and Toshiaki Nishioka should he get past Vazquez this weekend.
Rigondeaux believes he should be included in Donaire's plans as he is also a champion at the super bantamweight division.
"Nonito says he doesn't know me but he should know me," Rigondeaux said. "I am the champ in the division."
Rigondeaux won the WBA super bantamweight strap in only his 9th professional boxing match. He was a decorated amateur, having won gold medals in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics.
