Team Ortiz looking for new opponent
MANILA, Philippines – Former World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Victor Ortiz is in need of a new opponent after Andre Berto pulled out of their February 11 rematch due to a left arm injury.
Ortiz's trainer, Danny Garcia, told Examiner.com that his boxer may take a few months off and make his return in May, but added that they are already thinking of possible future opponents.
A possible opponent for Ortiz will be the winner of the February 25 match between Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander.
"Of course, we're going to watch that fight," Garcia said. "We're waiting to see if we can get the winner."
Another potential foe is British boxer Amir Khan, who may want to move up to the welterweight division.
Garcia is also considering a possible rematch against unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., who knocked out Ortiz in the fourth round of their match-up in September 2011.
"You never know, Mayweather doesn't have a fight right now because him and (Manny) Pacquiao, they're still deciding," he said. "Why not fight Mayweather in May?"
Mayweather has announced that he intends to return to the ring on May 5. Negotiations for a mega-fight between him and Pacquiao fell apart after the American boxer refused to accept a 50-50 split.
