TNT's Chot cherishes Philippine Cup win
MANILA, Philippines – For Talk N’ Text coach Chot Reyes, their recent PBA Philippine Cup title victory is one of the best they had in years.
After surviving a marathon semis series against Petron, Talk N’ Text beat Powerade in 5 games to retain the Philippine Cup (All-Filipino), something no other team did in 27 years.
"Every championship has its distinct flavor,” said Reyes in PBA.ph. “But the All-Filipino is different, and becoming the first back-to-back champion in 27 years, I’m out of words.”
Before their title win against the Tigers, the last time a PBA team defended the All-Filipino crown was in 1985 when Great Taste defeated Shell.
Reyes said their victory somehow eased the pain of failing to win the Grand Slam during the 2010-2011 PBA season.
The Texters were riding high after winning the Philippine Cup and the Commissioner’s Cup that season, but were foiled by Petron Blaze during the Fiesta Conference.
"Masakit 'yung pagkatalo namin sa Grand Slam pero ito naman 'yung kapalit, back-to-back Philippine Cup championships," said Reyes.
"This took 27 years in the making. Mas matagal iyon kaysa huling Grand Slam. That makes it so special," he added.
The title victory tied Reyes with Jong Uichico as the 4th in the all-time list of champion coaches with 8 titles.
Baby Dalupan had 15 title wins, followed by Tim Cone and Norman Black with 13 and 10, respectively.
Now that their campaign in the Philippine Cup is over, Reyes said his team looks forward to continue their winning ways in the upcoming Commissioner’s Cup.
Talk N’ Text is the defending champion, having won the crown last year.
"Prepare for the second conference," said Reyes on his plans after their PBA break.
