Donaire expecting best of Vazquez

MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is expecting nothing less than the best version of Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. when they face off for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title on February 4 at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas.

“I expect to see the best Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. He has excellent boxing blood lines,” Donaire said in an interview with Boxing Scene.

Vazquez is the son of Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo Vazquez, who won titles in the bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight divisions in the 1980s and 1990s.

Donaire said he needs to be smarter in his fight against Vazquez, who will be coming into the bout determined to win back his WBO super bantamweight belt.

Vazquez lost the belt against Jorge Arce last year, but Donaire believes that Vazquez has surely improved since that loss.

“I will be fighting a better Vazquez than the one that fought Arce,” Donaire said.

It will be Donaire’s first match at the super bantamweight division, but he said the weight is not an issue for him.

Donaire has said in many interviews that he wants to put on a show against Vazquez, especially as he is coming off a disappointing performance against Omar Narvaez last October.

Though Donaire won the bout handily – all the judges scored the bout 120-108 in his favor – he failed to provide any of the fireworks that fans were expecting.

That will not be a problem against Vazquez, who in his career has shown a willingness to stand and exchange punches with opponents, something Donaire is already looking forward to.

“The biggest guy I knocked down was a 165-pounder in sparring with big gloves and headgear,” he said. “If (Vazquez) wants to give on to take one, then he will have to be faster than me if he wants it to to work.”
